An 11 year old boy has been orphaned in the latest murder-suicide horror to hit the headlines. Already this year 13 other women and one seven-year-old child have been killed in a context of domestic violence – only five of these involving the perpetrators going on to commit suicide. In this latest tragedy, which took place in Felgueiras, a primary school teacher who had fled an abusive relationship with a partner who was already known for domestic violence against a previous partner, was shot dead outside the house she shared with the couple’s young son. The child is being treated for shock. Say reports, he heard the noise of the shooting, looked outside and “realised something had happened”. Before shooting himself dead, the child’s father reportedly called his brother, to ask him to take care of his son.
