Portugal’s minister of health on Friday admitted that there is a risk that some hospital accident and emergency departments will close due to doctors’ refusal to work overtime, but assured that he is working to guarantee the normal functioning of these services.
The national doctors’ federation (FNAM) warned today that “dramatic episodes are accumulating, with more than two dozen hospitals at risk of being left without accident and emergency departments”, with more than 1,500 doctors across the country having submitted declarations expressing their unwillingness to work more than the legal limit of 150 extra hours per year.
