The trial of the former deputy mayor of Funchal and a former colleague responsible for the gardens of the municipality has finally opened in Madeira, almost six years after the tragedy for which they are being held responsible. Both defendants have been charged with ‘negligent homicide’. Thirteen people died in August 2017 when a seriously compromised oak tree fell during a religious procession.
