“Old people’s homes have no capacity to respond”, reports SIC Notícias today, citing Vila do Conde where the Santa Casa da Misericórdia has almost 250 seniors on a waiting list. “The least urgent cases can wait 10 years for a place…” And even here, a place will cost roughly 1,600 per month which is almost always a lot more than old people’s pensions can cover. There is a plan for the construction of a second old people’s home in Vila do Conde, says SIC … but it will take “at least two years”.
