Portuguese children “increasingly medicated for hyperactivity”

The sale of medication for hyperactive children is “beating records in Portugal”, reports SIC television news. In the last year, more than 280,000 prescriptions were handed out – representing a 10% increase on previous years. According to Jornal de Notícias this could be an “overdiagnosis”, fuelled by the return to everyday classes following the pandemic. INFARMED says hyperactivity meds were the top selling last year when it came to the 10-14 year age group. This is not simply an issue in Portugal. The prescription of this kind of medication has been ringing alarm bells for a number of years.
