Portuguese drivers on podium at GT Cup Open Europe

Portuguese drivers Pedro Marreiros and Paulo Pinheiro (Porsche) finished with two third places at the GT Cup Open Europe last weekend in Portimão. The duo raced in the AM category, marking their first participation in the series.

Despite having suffered a three-place penalty that made them start from the fifth position on the grid, the two Portuguese finished in third place in the second race, repeating the result they achieved on Saturday, making them seventh overall among 16 participants.

“This was a very complicated race, with some setbacks. After the start, I tried everything to overtake third place, but I didn’t have enough top speed, and the car was very difficult to drive with a full tank. In the end, with the pace consistency we demonstrated, we managed to climb onto the podium again”, stressed Pedro Marreiros.

Paulo Pinheiro, on the other hand, underlined the “competitive rhythm” that they managed to set.

“We didn’t make any mistakes, keeping the car intact, which was essential for us to win two podiums”, he highlighted.

The winners were Spaniards Ivan Velasco and Jorge Cabezas (Ferrari), who won both weekend races and now lead the championship.

The Italian Glauco Solieri (Porsche) won the AM class.

The two Portuguese occupy the eighth place in the championship, with seven points.

The next round of the GT Cup Open Europe will take place in Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) between May 26 and 28.
