Rape cases reach 10-year high as petition to be debated in Parliament

Over 500 inquiries into cases of rape were registered in 2022 in Portugal, a 26% increase compared to 2021 and the largest number in the last 10 years.

The data comes from the yearly Internal Safety report, which shows that while 60% of rapes in 2021 were committed by people who knew or were close to the victims, there was an increase of rapes committed by strangers in 2022.

A petition calling for rape to be considered a public crime and signed by over 107,000 people is due to be discussed in Parliament on Thursday.
