
Various news items today have centred on the rising cost of “basic foods”, like fish and meat (staples of Portuguese cuisine).
Universities are appealing for ‘state help’ to stock their canteens; consumer association DECO reports that the ‘essential food basket’ has increased €12 in price just since the beginning of January.
Citing the cost of a kilo of beef, DECO stresses this has increased 132% in four years (in 2022, a kilo cost €5.82; now it costs an average of €13.58.
Traditional choices are becoming more and more difficult to entertain. Supermarkets are already plugging ‘a cheap alternative to bacalhau’ (paloco, billed as ‘coming from the same family’ but easily a third of the price).
Says SIC today: “Week by week prices are increasing. Money that in the past filled supermarket trolleys stretches less and less. And this is having an impact on the Portuguese diet”.
