With the Easter school holidays still upon us, media reports are warning today of trouble ahead for the summer term. The struggle waged since last year by teachers, for better pay and conditions – and particularly for the recovery of years in which careers were ‘frozen’ – will be continuing. “There is no point hoping for peace or stability” headlines Sábado, while Correio da Manhã warns that this year will see 1,323 teachers retire. Teachers are retiring, says the paper, at an average of 265 per month. With ‘deadlock’ characterising talks between unions and the government, negotiations are expected to resume this week, “with no agreement in sight”.
