The Algarve’s water company, Águas do Algarve, has scheduled several activities to celebrate World Water Day and raise awareness of the importance of water and its correct and efficient use.
On March 22, citizens are urged to join the H2OFF Movement, during which taps are turned off for an hour, between 22:00 and 23:00. It is the third consecutive year that Águas do Algarve is taking part in the initiative launched by the APDA (Portuguese Association of Water Distribution and Drainage).
“Using water intelligently and responsibly is imperative to guarantee a sustainable future in the current climate change context. It is essential to talk about valuing water and its conscious use. Every entity is responsible for promoting reflection on the subject”, says Teresa Fernandes, national coordinator of the Specialised Committee for Communication and Environmental Education at APDA.
To mark the day, Águas do Algarve is also launching its digital book “101 Fun Ways to Save Water” and promoting a Walk for Water in Quarteira.
The Walk for Water is organised in partnership with APDA, Águas do Algarve, the Municipality and Parish Council of Loulé, and the E.B. 2, 3 of Quarteira and D. Dinis Secondary Schools.
More than 500 students from the 5th and 7th grades will take part in two walks that will start from the Praça do Mar in Quarteira. During the walks, there will be messages, posters, songs, music, theatre, and poems spreading awareness for water protection.
“Together, we will be stronger to promote conscious reflection on the problems that threaten this essential resource and the need to value water as a scarce and indispensable life resource”, highlights Teresa Fernandes.
